How to avoid spam filters in email marketing

All you need to know about spam filters

How to make your emails more engaging! We've collated all the best practices we've witnessed from our clients to help you create more engaging emails. This webinar will be suitable for anyone who creates emails for internal comms or external marketing.

As email communicators, spam filters and email bots are our arch nemesis. They skew our data and generally just get in our way!

Modern bots and spam filters are very powerful. In this webinar we will explain exactly how the bots and spam filters of 2022 work. We will also provide guidance on how you can avoid the dreaded spam folder.

Spam filters aim to prevent unwanted emails from cluttering your inbox, but legitimate emails may trigger them, leading to misclassification. Typically, spam filters employ a scoring mechanism, assessing various factors in your email. If the score surpasses the threshold, usually 5 points, your email gets flagged as spam. Here are strategies to avoid this trap:

Encourage Safe Sender List Inclusion:

Begin your email with a message urging subscribers to add you to their safe sender list. This simple addition fosters trust and ensures your email address is recognised as safe for future correspondence.

Implement SPF Record:

Whether using Outlook or an email marketing platform, ensure your emails contain a valid SPF record. This record grants permission to send emails on behalf of your domain, enhancing credibility with spam filters.

Avoid Spam Triggers:

Be mindful of spam-inducing elements like excessive capitalization, exclamation marks, and red text. Also, refrain from using MS Word coding and embedding videos or forms, as these can trigger spam filters.

Optimize Subject Lines:

Craft subject lines thoughtfully to avoid triggering spam filters. Steer clear of all caps, excessively long lines, and common spam-related terms like “free” or “limited time offer”.

Optimize Alt Text:

Utilize alt text for images to ensure accessibility and engagement. Descriptive alt text encourages subscribers to download images, enhancing the overall email experience.

By adhering to these best practices, you can mitigate the risk of your emails being erroneously marked as spam, improving deliverability and engagement rates.
